SANTO DOMINGO. Environment Minister Bautista Rojas received today a donation for the sum of USD$140,000 dollars (RD$5.8 million) on behalf of EGE HAINA, to be destined for the retiring and depollution of the Konstantinos Tanker, which has been enclaved in Isla Beata, in the Pedernales province for more than 10years. Rojas Gómez received the checque from Marcelo Aicardi, GM to EGEHAINA, as was informed by the environmental portfolio through a press release.
It was informed that the operation, headed by Idemar, will cover cleaning, extraction, transportation and final disposal of oily residue, to avoid polluting this marine zone.
The “Konstantinos” is Hondurean, and was covering the Jamaica-Santo Domingo route, and since 2003, it docked in the vicinity of Isla Beata, which forms part of the Jaragua National Park protected zone.
In the press release, the environment minister does not establish if EGEHAINA was responsible for the embarkation or the fuel it transported. In accordance to a publication made in the El Faro blog from 2011, the vessel featured an undetermined amount of hydrocarbons, which had been raided on different occasions.
Making reference to a report from 2007, in which the captain had drafted a maritime accident, and declaring the amount of 20,000 gasoil gallons, as well as 10,000 extra gallons on-board.
He also pointed out that the investigation in this case was made by the Attorney General for environmental issues in Barahona, Bolívar D’Oleo Montero, but that the case was filed and left cold.
The information published on the blog by way of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was attained in 2007 so Honduras would become liable for the barge. Priorly it has been declared that the “Konstantinos” was the new – unofficial- name of Asphalt Caribe, a tanker built in Spain in 1986, and property of Apirotan Shipping Company from Greece, which despite having Greek ownership, was sailing waiving the Hondurean flag and was registered in San Lorenzo, a small town in the Central American country.
