Ingenio Cristobal Colon Receives Environmental License

SAN PEDRO DE MACORIS.- The Ingenio Cristobal Colon, owned under the CAEI Consortium, became the first national mil to certify under the ISO14001 Norm for Environmental Management, and which also reinforces the company’s in-house environmental protection policy.

The certification was granted for the production and trading of raw and brown sugar, refined sugar and molasses. Audit procedures were led by the audit firm SGS of Panama, world leader in inspection, verification, trials and certification. The accreditation process was performed by UKAS Management Systems.

This step forward by the mill is part of its strategic plan to “reach higher international standards in matters of product quality and respect to the environment”, stated Alberto Potes, Exec. VP at CAEI.

A press release issued by CAEI states that the Ingenio Cristóbal Colón began implementing the norm back in 2014. Meanwhile, in 2015, the assessment criteria extended to comprise all production operations and administrative areas.

The release indicated that from May to June this year, a certification audit took place, meanwhile approval for norm issuance under the company took effect on August 19th, and the certificate was delivered in September. The norm is valid for two years, and every year, a follow-up audit is carried out.

Alberto Potes stated that as goodwill citizens, “we must care and protect our environment, making sure to produce all our products in a responsible manner”. Potes also reminded that by using bagasse, the company replaces fossil fuel usage, this means “we work coherently aiming to position the company as an environmental, social and financially responsible enterprise”

Ingenio Cristobal Colon Attains ISO Norm 14001 for Environmental Management

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic.- The Ingenio Cristobal Colon, owned by CAEI, became the first sugar mill in the country to attain the ISO 14001 Norm for Environmental Management, thus strengthening the environmental protection policies established and practiced by the company.

The certification was granted for producing and trading sugar, refined sugar and molasses, as informed by CAEI, a company featured within the asset portfolio managed by Putney Capital Management, partner of INICIA.

This step forward by the mill is part of its strategic plan to “reach higher international standards in matters of product quality and respect to the environment”, CAEI explained. “This way, the Dominican company will be up to par with the demands set by the international market, to sell a sustainable and environmental-friendly product”.

CAEI stressed that the Ingenio Cristóbal Colón began implementing the ISO Norm in 2014. In 2015, the assessment criteria requirements expanded to cover production operations and administrative areas. From May to June this year, a certification audit took place, meanwhile approval for norm issuance under the company took effect on August 19th, and the certificate was delivered in September. The norm is valid for two years, and every year, a follow-up audit is carried out.

Alberto Potes, Exec. VP to CAEI, expressed that as goodwill citizens, “we must care and protect our environment, making sure to produce all our products in a responsible manner”. Potes reminded that the mill issues several important investments towards reducing water usage and proper management of the recourse, also in particle emissions to the atmosphere, and using entomology control mechanisms, as well as organic fertilizers in the cane plantations.

Also, by using bagasse, the company replaces fossil fuel usage, this means “we work coherently aiming to position the company as an environmental, social and financially responsible enterprise”. The company informed that the ISO NORM 14001 reinforces its rigorous environmental management program. In 2010, the mill set up a wastewater treatment plant featuring a capacity of 500 gallons/minute, thus ensuring that all water leaving the production operations is treated and returned to the environment, under strict quality parameters so required by the environmental authorities.

In 2011, a cooling tower became operational, which controls all the in-plant water by closed circuit. “This way, only 300 gallons of water are used per minute, versus the 30,000 gallons used in the past”, the company reiterated.

“This is also the first in-country sugar mill featuring the extended ISO9001: 2008 Norm, which includes production, milling, packaging, warehousing and trading of brown sugar, refined sugar and molasses”.
