Poverty and the lack of awareness by Dominican society are the main factors which have caused that, since 2010-2014, according to survey data gathered by the National Home Survey (*Encuesta Nacional de Hogares- EnHogar), over 300,000 adolescents to perform some type of labor activity.
To preserve the rights of children is a commitment assumed by entities, whose fields require without hesitation, greater workforce and longer shifts, through CSR activity programs which promote the no tolerance of this type of unlawful contracting.
This is why CAEI, together with the Cane Communities, in order to prevent and reduce for children to participate in work shifts, asides partaking in child exploitation, celebrate World Day against Child Labor on June 12th each year, through an activities program to motivate and teach parents not to allow their children to work. Asides, this incentivizes and drives children to develop normally through each stage of their lives, and to value cultural activities as well as schooling.
“The campaign supports education, sports and culture in benefits of the workers’ children. It applies the relevant policies in the contracting practice in order to ensure that no youth below 18yrs works in their operations”; so said the Chairman of CAEI, Alberto Potes.
According to the company chairman, child labor deprives children of their potential and dignity, therefore by way of the Cane Communities Department, this ensures that over 4,000 children living in the neighboring bateyes, have access to quality education and health services.
Potes guarantees that CAEI bans child labor in its operations as well as with its vendors.
