CAEI distinguished the contributions made by sugar cane suppliers, as an incentive to their efforts and the improvement in productivity conditions of their fields.

The distinguished and rewarded producers were Savino Antonio and Victorino Santana, in the small-scale producer category; Gregorio Javier Santana, in the medium-scale category while on behalf of the large-scale producers, the honor went to Jesús María Ferreira Martínez.

The winners each received a plaque of recognition and a cash prize, during a ceremony hosted at the Los Robles Club of the Ingenio Cristóbal Colón, in San Pedro de Macorís.

The handing of the plaques was made by the CAEI executive VP, Alberto Potes; the agricultural director, Wilson Rosa; the Harvest director, Juan Pablo Rivera; and the president of the Dominican Sugar Settlers Federation (Fedoca), Julián Peralta.

The soccer teams, both Male and Female of the Atabeira Fé y Alegría Elementary School of Nuevo Cayacoa, in San José de los Llanos, were crowned invictus champions of the First School Gathering for Arts, Recreation and Sports.

The Ministry of Education (MINERD), to officially conclude the 2012-2013 school year, hosted the event at the Mauricio Báez Club in Villa Juana.

Cement Companies Fit to Supply Demand for 15 Years

SANTO DOMINGO. Eng. Carlos González, new chairman of the Dominican Association of Cement Producers (ADOCEM), pointed out that local cement companies have installed capacity of 6 million tons, fit to supply the local demand for the next 15 or 20 years.

He said that the Dominican Republic has a growing demand for infrastructure and housing construction works and needs to seize its resources in an efficient manner, asides developing their local industry, in order to compete in the global world.

Since June 2011, González presides CEMEX in the country and holds under his responsibility the infrastructure and housing projects of this company for South America and the Caribbean, as well as the operations in Haiti, Bahamas and Jamaica. He is Mexican, Veracruz-born. He is relieving Eng. Osvaldo Oller, VP of Domicem, whom at the new Board of Directors assumed the position of Vicepresident.

He made remarks that within the apex of his work, he will emphasize on the promotion of new, adequate and greater, uses of cement in its new diverse applications, as well as the diffusion of best practices, research and skills-building.

The Dominican Association of Portland Cement Producers (ADOCEM) is an initiative by one of the main cement producer companies in the country: Cemex, Cementos Cibao, Domicem and Cementos Argos, whom seek to convert this institution into a conglomerate of support to the construction industry in the country, promoting the general interests of its productive activity.

Communities receive medical services from CAEI

Residents in the CAEI slums receive medication during the medical drive hosted by the company in the community of San Felipe, of the Angelina Sugar Mill.

San Pedro de Macorís

CAEI hosted a community medical drive in the San Felipe Community, of the Angelina Sugar Mill, in which hundreds of zone residents were given the facility of receiving free medical consultation services in pediatrics, cardiology, gastroenterology, gynecology, urology and other specializations, as well as all prescription medication.

During the activity, CAEI executive VP Alberto Potes, delivered an ambulance and double-cabin pickup truck for all services being developed by the Sugar Cane Community Health Program, a program created by the company.

The journey, framed within the program, is the first of a series of activities to be held by the consortium during the dry season, with the support of ARS Ser Salud and the Clínica Esperanza y Caridad (*The Hope and Charity Clinic), which form part of the medical service providers used by CAEI.

CAEI produced 95,351 metric tons of sugar in the current harvest, which represents an increase by 28.32%, versus the 74,302 tons collected from last year, this being the largest production in the history of the Ingenio Cristóbal Colón.

In the 2012-2013, CAEI generated over 4,000 direct jobs and 12,000 contractor jobs, asides paying an estimated RD$750 million in salaries and benefits due, including contributions to social security.

From the current harvest, CAEI exported 45,572 metric tons of sugar to the U.S in order to meet the U.S quota, keeping in stock some 40,000 metric tons. This greater product availability will allow the country to stop imports, which contributes vastly to consolidating the national industry, to sustain and improve employment and reduce using foreign currency for purposes of said imports.

Asides generating some 16,000 jobs between direct and contractor positions, as well as purchasing sugar cane from region producers, they contribute greatly to improving the national socioeconomic balance of the region, especially in San Pedro de Macorís, San José de los Llanos, Guerra, Bayaguana, Boca Chica, Quisqueya and Consuelo, among others.

CAEI produced 95,351 metric tons of sugar in the current crop, which represents an increase of 28.32% with respects to the 74,302 metric tons from last year. This is the highest crop ever in the history of the Christopher Columbus sugar mill. During the 2012-13 season, CAEI generated over 4,000 direct jobs and 12,000 contractor positions, and also paid some RD$750 million in salaries and benefits due, including social security contributions.

From the production of the present harvest, CAEI exported 45,572 metric tons of sugar to the U.S, in total compliance of their quota, keeping some 40,000 tons available in stock to tend to the local market needs.

This greater availability of the raw material will allow the country to stop importing, which contributes significantly to the consolidation of the national industry, to sustain and improve jobs, and reducing the use of foreign currency that used to be destined to import purposes.

According to a press release published by CAEI, the company had a surplus by over 40,000 tons in sugar cane bagasse, which was sold to companies within the region to replace the use of crude oil these companies use in order to use their boilers. This way, CAEI will also be contributing greatly to improve the national environmental condition.

The creation of approximately 16,000 jobs between direct and contractor positions, as well as the purchasing of sugar cane to all region producers, contribute greatly towards improving the socioeconomic balance region-wide, especially in the areas of San Francisco de Macorís, San José de los Llanos, Guera, Bayaguana, Boca Chica, Quisqueya, and Consuelo, among others.

Students Are Encouraged to Undertake Film Studies

SDE. The chancellor of the Higher Community Technical Institute (ITSC), Victor Hugo Deláncer, valued the development of Pinewood Indomina Studios, with its modern Water Tank, the second aquatic space used in the world for film production.

Through a communiqué, Deláncer expressed this space represents a significant contribution to the local initiative, with extraordinary global impact, which will promote job sources in strategic areas for national development.

Deláncer exhorted young high school graduates to enroll in Film Studies, and to assess the curricular offer provided by ITSC, such as: Production and Event Organization, Fashion Design, Interior Design, Graphic Design, Photography, Electricity, Car Mechanics among others.
