Cabo Rojo, Pedernales. EGEHAINA announced an investment of USD$100M, for the second phase of the Los Cocos Wind Park in this community, which will add another 52MW to the system, which is expected for year-end.

The Los Cocos Wind Park currently produces 26MW and hopes that it reaches 77MW by year-end. EGEHAINA began receiving the turbo generators that will form part of the 2nd phase of the Los Cocos Wind Park, which together with the original 14 generators will elevate the number of wind jets to 40 units. The EGEHAINA investment surpasses the amount of USD$400M.

The new 26 aerial jets are arriving to the country through the Cabo Rojo Harbor, where they will be transferred to Juancho for its installation and were received by Tito Sanjurjo, EGEHAINA GM, joined by Celso Marranzini, Exec. VP of the CDEEE, Enrique Ramírez, president of the CNE, and Dionis Sánchez, Senator for Pedernales. During the gathering, Sanjurjo expressed that phase 1 has been operational for over a year. He expressed his satisfaction for the arrival of the new turbo jets and for the park expansion, which “proves the commitment made by our investors and Dominican authorities to continue contributing to the development of inland clean energy”.

Meanwhile Enrique Ramírez expressed that phase 2 is a new step in developing clean energy nationwide. By year-end the Park will insert a production of 85MW to the national electric system. Ramírez made reference that the country is becoming the largest investor in the Caribbean region within the field of wind energy and would be the third Central American country with the highest wind energy production. He quoted the potential the nation has to produce up to 1,300MW of wind-based and solar energy, unimaginable.

These projects are the result of the trust and advance given to the sector. Regarding information that the DR is one of the least attractive countries for this type of investment in green energy, Ramírez said only Costa Rica and Honduras feature greater capacity than the Dominican Republic.

Participants. Dionis Sanchez, Pedernales senator; Enrique Ramirez, director of the National Energy Commission; Tito Sanjurjo, Ege Haina general manager; Celso Marranzin, EVP CDEEE.

EGEHAINA received the 26 aerial generators, which will form part of the second phase construction of the Los Cocos Wind Park in Juancho, Pedernales, resulting in a capacity increase from 25 to 77MW. So explained Tito Sanjurjo, GM for EGEHAINA, whom expressed that with this new phase, a full ensemble of 40 turbo jets is completed, featuring a 2MW capacity per unit, resulting in a total annual savings in the importation of 500,000 crude oil barrels, hence avoiding the emission of some 200,000 tons of CO2.

The new generation units, imported from, arrived yesterday to the Cabo Rojo Harbor, and feature a generation capacity greater than the original 14 generators, which produce 1.8Mw each; and produce 128.5 mts. high, 3.5 mts. higher than the previous ones. Los Cocos, together with the Quilvio Cabrera Park, located also in Pedernales, constitutes the first wind generation project in the country.

Sanjurjo explained that this year, EGEHAINA has invested so far USD$400million in the national electric system, which features Los Cocos and an energy park located in San Pedro de Macorís.  The director of the National Energy Commission (CNE), Enrique Ramírez, said that in the DR has become the Caribbean nation with the greatest wind energy generation capacity, emphasizing that the country has a potential to produce 1,300MW of wind-based energy.

The official criticized the results presented by the ClimaScope analysis which places the DR as one of the least attractive countries for clean energy investment, among the 26 assessed countries, and affirmed that in the last year alone, the country has received more investments due to this concept than the other Caribbean nations within the region and that Law 57-07, on Incentives to Developing Clean Energy Sources and its Special Regimes is being studied by other countries for its emulation.

Ramírez considered that the DR has much potential for photovoltaic generation, and estimates that it will be the country with the most production in this type of energy in the near future. The Pedernales Senator, Dionis Sánchez said that Juancho and the main municipality of Pedernales feature 24hr connection circuits, and the initiative will extend to Oviedo on the short-term.

EGEHAINA received yesterday 26 new aerial generators, purchased with a USD$100M investment, which will be integrated to the second phase of the Los Cocos Wind Park, in Juancho, Pedernales and will contribute with 52MW of clean energy to the Dominican electrical system by ends this year. The aerial generators, were received at the Cabo Rojo Harbor during a meeting held with the press and media, headed by Tito Sanjurjo, GM for EGEHAINA; Celso Marranzini, Exec. VP for the CDEEE;  Enrique Ramirez, president of the National Energy Commission (CNE); and Dionis Sánchez, senator for the Pedernales province.

During the encounter, Sanjurjo emphasized that the expansion of the Los Cocos Wind Park, its installed capacity will triple, going from 25 to 77MW, which will result in annual savings equal to 500,000 crude oil barrels, and preventing the annual emission of almost 200,000 tons of CO2.

Sanjurjo expressed his satisfaction for the timely arrival of the new turbo jets, and for the expansion of the Los Cocos Wind Park, which proves the commitment assumed by our investors and the Dominican authorities of continuing to contribute with the challenge that is generating clean energy in the country.

The EGEHAINA GM seized the moment to recognize the vision of the authorities in the Dominican electrical system regarding the importance it represents for sustainable development nationwide to take advantage of this inexhaustible clean energy source, which is wind, and that in Pedernales it reaches its highest capacity inland.

He said that so far this year, EGEHAINA has invested USD$400million in two projects, which means a high stake that investing in the country is worth the effort.

On his end, the CNE defined the arrival of these generators as a historical milestone in national history. Also, projects like Los Cocos are proof that the country can invest in renewable energy, and that thanks to the State vision which features a Law offering incentives and warranties asides benefits to investors. Ramírez stated that the country is currently the nation investing the most in clean energy throughout the entire Caribbean.

The CDEEE Exec. VP expressed this project demonstrates the trust there is in the nation to make such an investment. Still in the Dominican Republic, the full potential of this sector remains undeveloped, so much more can be done. Investors can rely on all necessary support.
